Repair or replace? How to decide when your laser or IPL breaks down

Your machine has stopped, a replacement quote lands in your inbox, and the number is eye-watering. Before you commit, it is worth asking whether the fault can be repaired for far less. Sometimes it can. Sometimes it cannot. Here is how to tell.

Start with a proper diagnosis

“It’s dead” covers a huge range of faults, from a blown fuse to a failed laser source. A diagnosis tells you which one you have. Ours starts with free phone triage, and a diagnosis visit is £95 if it needs an engineer on site. You decide what happens next.

Questions that point towards repair

  • Is the fault in a part that wears, such as a lamp, pump, filter, handpiece or footswitch?
  • Is it an electronics fault, such as a power supply or a board, that can be repaired rather than replaced?
  • Is the rest of the machine in good order, and is it still the right machine for your treatments?

Questions that point towards replacing

  • Is the main laser source or core component failing, and is it a significant share of what a newer machine would cost?
  • Are parts no longer available from anyone?
  • Is this the third big repair in a year?
  • Has the technology moved on enough that your clients now expect something different?

What a fair repair quote includes

  • What is wrong, in plain English
  • Parts and labour shown separately
  • Whether VAT is included
  • What happens if the job turns out bigger than expected

That last point matters. With us, if the job grows, we stop and ask before spending your money. See how we price work on the price guide.

If you do decide to replace

We can help with the awkward bit: installing the new machine and safely decommissioning the old one.
