A used laser or IPL can be a sensible way into the business. It can also be a very expensive lesson. If you are considering one, work through this checklist before you hand over any money.
1. Ask for the paperwork
Service history, the last service certificate, the manual and any repair invoices. A seller who has looked after a machine is usually happy to show you. A seller who cannot find anything is telling you something.
2. Check the counters
Many machines record pulses or shots fired. Ask what the count is, and what the lamp, cartridge or tip is rated for. A low number on the screen means little if the part was swapped recently or has been reset.
3. Look closely at the handpiece
Handpieces take the most wear and can be one of the most expensive items to replace. Check the cable, the window or tip, and the connector for damage. See our guide to handpiece repair to understand the cost of putting one right.
4. Inspect the cooling system
Look for old, cloudy or low coolant, damp patches, and unusual pump noise. Cooling problems are one of the common reasons machines fail, and they are not always obvious on a quick demonstration.
5. Find out if parts and support still exist
If the manufacturer has gone and parts are scarce, a cheap machine can become a very costly one. Ask us before you buy if you are unsure.
6. Get it inspected independently
An independent inspection costs a small fraction of the price of a machine. We can test it, check the safety systems and give you a written view of its condition before you pay. Pre-purchase inspections start from £195. See the price guide.
7. Plan the move and installation
Machines should be drained, packed and moved properly, then installed and tested at the other end. We can install and test it so it is safe before the first client.
